glossaryProviding the definition and meaning of words and concepts used in the expression of the Gnostic Dharma.

This glossary or dictionary is but a small introduction to the vast scope of the Gnostic Teachings. The knowledge given in the writings of Samael Aun Weor ranges across the whole of human experience and therefore draws on the world's great treasure of language and mystical expression; what cannot be expressed accurately in one language or religious context may find its perfect meaning in another tongue or theology.

Glorian Publishing invites additions, suggestions and corrections for all the terms in this Glossary.

The Gnostic Glossary is being prepared for a print edition.

Term Definition
V.I.T.R.I.O.L."Vitriol is one of the clues of the Gnostic Alchemist. The word signifies: “Visitam Interiorem Terre Rectificatum Invenias Ocultum Lapidum.” “Visit the interior of the earth, which through rectifying you will find the occult stone.” - From The Revolution of Beelzebub.

By rectifying the interior of our own earth, the physical body, we find the source of all powers: the Intimate Christ.

Vaivasvata Manu

From The Secret Doctrine by H. P. Blavatsky: “In one case it has reference to that mystery when mankind was saved from utter destruction, by the mortal woman being made the receptacle of the human seed at the end of the Third Race, and in the other to the real and historical Atlantean submersion. In both cases the “Host” — or the Manu which saved the seed — is called Vaivasvata Manu. Hence the diversity between the Puranic and other versions; while in the Sathapatha Brahmana, Vaivasvata produces a daughter and begets from her the race of Manu; which is a reference to the first human Manushyas, who had to create women by will (Kriyasakti), before they were naturally born from the hermaphrodites as an independent sex, and who were, therefore, regarded as their creator’s daughters. The Purânic accounts make of her (Ida or Ila) the wife of Budha (Wisdom), the latter version referring to the events of the Atlantean flood, when Vaivasvata, the great Sage on Earth, saved the Fifth Root-race from being destroyed along with the remnants of the Fourth. This is shown very clearly in the Bhagavad Gitâ, where Krishna is made to say: — “The Seven great Rishis, the four preceding Manus, partaking of my essence, were born from my mind: from them sprung (were born) the human races and the world.” (Chapter X., verse 6). Here the four preceding “Manus,” out of the seven, are the four Races which have already lived, since Krishna belongs to the Fifth Race, his death having inaugurated the Kali Yuga. Vaivasvata Manu, the son of Surya (the Sun), and the saviour of our Race, is connected with the Seed of Life, both physically and spiritually.”

Vajra(Sanskrit, "thunderbolt, lightning, diamond, adamantine") In Hinduism, the weapon of Indra. In Tibetan Buddhism, a symbol of true reality, the Emptiness, the Absolute, that which is indestructible. (In Tibetan, dorje).

Vajrasana

("The Adamantine Pose") A posture for meditation or Alchemy. Described by Swami Sivananda as follows: "Those who sit in this Asana have a quite steady and firm pose. They cannot be easily shaken. The knees are rendered very hard. Merudanda becomes firm and strong. This Asana resembles more or less the Namaz pose in which the Muslims sit for prayer. Keep the soles of the feet on both sides of the anus, i.e., place the thighs on the legs one over the other and the soles on the buttocks. The calves must touch the thighs. The part from the toe to the knee should touch the ground. The whole burden of the body is put on the knees and ankles. In the beginning of practice you may feel a slight pain in the knee and ankle-joints but it passes off very quickly. Massage the painful parts and two joints with the hands. You can use a little Iodex or Amrutanjan for rubbing. After fixing the feet and the knees, put both the hands straight on the knees. Keep the knees quite close. Sit like this keeping the trunk, neck and head in one straight line. This is the most common Asana. You can sit in this Asana for a very long time comfortably. Yogins generally sit in this Asana. If you sit in this Asana for fifteen minutes immediately after food, the food will be digested well. Dyspeptics will derive much benefit. The Nadis, nerves and muscles of the legs and thighs are strengthened. Myalgia in the knees, legs, toes and thighs disappears. Sciatica vanishes. Flatulence is removed. Stomach exercises a stimulating, beneficial influence on Kanda, the most vital part from which all the Nadis spring."

Vajrasattva(Sanskrit; Tibetan dorje tekpa) Literally, Diamond Vehicle, or Diamond Soul.

Vajrayana

(Sanksrit, literally "Diamond Vehicle") Also known as Tantrayana and Mantrayana. A tradition of esoteric Buddhism.

"It is evident that the Vajrayana Path is really profoundly Buddhist and Christic... The Vajrayana school, with its deep esoterism, leads us along the sexual path to the incarnation of the Word and final liberation... Disciples of the Vajrayana school labor tenaciously in the “Forge of the Cyclops” (sex) with the intelligent objective of achieving Innermost realization of the Illuminating Emptiness." - The Mystery of the Golden Blossom

Vajroli Mudra

(Sanskrit, from vajra: "thunderbolt, lightning, diamond, adamantine")

A practice common to Hindu and Tibetan Yogas, albeit with an incredible amount of variation and opposing uses. As described by Swami Sivananda in his book Kundalini Yoga:  "This is an important Yogic Kriya in Hatha Yoga. You will have to work hard to get full success in this Kriya. There are very few people who are experts in this act... This Kriya is of immense use for keeping up perfect Brahmacharya (chastity)... Even a drop of semen cannot come out of the Yogi who practises this Mudra... The Yogi, who draws his semen up and preserves it, conquers death. Good smell emanates from his body... The object of Vajroli Mudra is to be perfectly established in Brahmacharya. When aspirants practise this Mudra, they unconsciously divert their mind to sexual centres and thereby they cannot get any success. When you see the description of this Mudra, you will clearly understand that strict Brahmacharya is absolutely necessary... This must be done under the direct guidance of a Guru."

Samael Aun Weor indicated that certain aspects of the traditional Vajroli are damaging to the organism. He taught a safe method in the transcribed book "The Tibetan Exercises of Rejuvenation."

"It causes us great horror to know that the tenebrous black magicians of the Drukpa clan (those who are dedicated to the fatal and horrible black tantrism) ejaculate the seminal liquor during their practices of black magic. These black magicians have a fatal technique that enables them to reabsorb the spilled semen. Such a technique is known as black vajroli. This practice is completely negative; therefore we do not even want to explain the procedure. We know that there exist many people with very weak mentalities, who could easily be led into practicing such horrible black tantrism. Karma would then fatally fall upon us. The spilled semen is mixed with feminine “verya” (feminine semen) and afterwards it is re-absorbed. Thus, it is horribly recharged with atoms of the secret enemy. These are satanic atoms that are collected from the atomic infernos of the human being. The inevitable result of this black tantrism is the descent of the serpent towards the atomic abyss of Nature. This is how the human personality ends. It is definitely disconnected from its Divine Spirit. The human being is then transformed into a demon. The Arcanum A.Z.F. (Urdhvarata) was practiced within the ashrams of ancient India. At that time, yogis were prepared for sexual magic with the white vajroli. Unfortunately, the brothers and sisters of the temple committed scandalous acts, which discredited sexual magic. The Gurujis then pulled the curtains of esoterism shut, and the Arcanum A.Z.F. was forbidden." - The Yellow Book

Valentine, BasilAn alchemical legend whose actual identity has yet to be discovered, yet is is presumed that he lived in the fifteenth century and was likely to have been a Benedictine monk. According to tradition, his name is derived from the Greek basileus, the King, and valens, powerful, thus meaning the Powerful King, the Philosopher’s Stone. His legacy is immortalized in his Twelve Keys, a series of highly symbolic drawings.

Vampires"Among the most abominable products of Lilith, it is opportune to cite the case of Count Dracula in Russia. This movie’s personage truly existed, and H. P. Blavatsky comments about him in one of her books. This great female Master stated that such a Count (in times of the Czars) was the Mayor of a certain Russian town. He mortally hated his wife, because vampires are homosexuals; they mortally hate the opposite sex... An order of vampires exists in Palestine; they hide themselves behind the following title, “Order of the Immortal Guardians of the Holy Sepulcher.” Vampires are the outcome of homosexuality in combination with Tantrism between persons of the same sex.  It is an execrable monstrosity, a frightful abomination." - The Doomed Aryan Race

Vanity"The aggregate or psychic aggregate of vanity impedes the correct relation with the superior parts of the Being. Vanity is a relative of pride. Vanity is a charlatan. Pride is silent. Someone will speak about certain things because of vanity, yet, will keep silent about them because of pride." - from The Pistis Sophia Unveiled

“This is the power of taming wild animals and bringing them under control. It is the power of mesmerising persons by the exercise of will and of making them obedient to one’s own wishes and orders. It is the restraint of passions and emotions. It is the power to bring men, women and the elements under subjection.” - Swami Sivananda, Kundalini Yoga

Let us understand mat by "intellectual animals," we mean all of humanity, all those who possess only lunar bodies. The Venustic Initiation is the real Christmas of the tranquil heart. It is for the few; it is by the grace of the Solar Logos. In nirvana, there exist many Buddhas who, despite their great perfection, have never attained the Venustic Initiation." - from Buddha's Necklace

The Venustic Intiations are the Seven Serpents of Light of the First Mountain plus one more related with the Sephirah Binah.

"The one who sacrifices the self for humanity attains the Venustic Initiation. It is urgent to know that the Venustic Initiation is the incarnation of Christ within the human being. The one who incarnates the Christ in oneself has to live the entire Cosmic Drama. The Venustic Initiation has seven degrees; it begins with the event of Bethlehem and ends with the Death and Resurrection of the Lord. The one who reaches the Venustic Initiation also becomes a Christ. It is only by means of the Three Factors for the Revolution of Consciousness that one attains the Venustic Initiation." - The Esoteric Treatise of Hermetic Astrology

VeronicaIn several regions of Christendom there is honored under this name a pious matron of Jerusalem who, during the Passion of Christ, as one of the holy women who accompanied Him to Calvary, offered Him a towel on which he left the imprint of His face. This is a symbol of Christ-Will. (See The Three Mountains.)

Vesta

(Roman name; known in Greek as Hestia) Hestia is the gentle, virgin goddess of the hearth-fire (both private & municipal), the home and family. She voluntarily relinquished her position as one of the twelve Olympians in place of Dionysos. As recompense she was made goddess of the sacrificial flame and granted a portion of all sacrifices to the gods. She is clearly a symbol of the the Divine Mother Kundalini, the root fire of all that exists. She was highly honored in every household from early times to the beginning of Christianity, when her worship was outlawed. Her public cult maintained a sacred building in which her priestesses, the vestal virgins, tended the communal hearth and fire, which was never allowed to die out.

"To Hestia, fumigation from Aromatics. Daughter of Kronos, venerable dame, who dwellest amidst great fire’s eternal flame; in sacred rites these ministers are thine, mystics much blessed, holy and divine. In thee the Gods have fixed their dwelling place, strong, stable basis of the mortal race. Eternal, much formed, ever florid queen, laughing and blessed, and of lovely mien; accept these rites, accord each just desire, and gentle health and needful good inspire.” –Orphic Hymn 84 to Hestia

VestalA term derived from Roman religion, referring to a priestess of Vesta. While still little girls, they were chosen from prominent Roman families. Their duties included the preparation of sacrifices and the tending of the sacred fire. If any vestal broke her vow of chastity, she was entombed alive. The vestals had great influence in the Roman state. Their primary duty was to work in the sacred practice of Alchemy with the Initiates of the temple. The use of Vestals is no longer lawful and is not a part of any White Tradition in these times.

Vidya

(Sanskrit) Science, knowledge. Hinduism defines two forms of vidya:

1. aparavidya: lower knowledge, which is acquired through the intellect

2. paravidya: higher knowledge, gained through intuitive, conscious, spiritual experience, and leads to liberation from the ego.

This term is also used in a Tantric application, where vidya (Tibetan: rig ma) refers to a "knowledge woman" or tantric consort.

Vinaya(Sanskrit, "discipline") Usually refers to monastic discipline and the observance of vows or ethical codes.

Vipashyana

(or Vipassana; Sanskrit / Pali) Insight. Vi comes from viesa which means “special” or “superior.” Ashyana means “to perceive.” So Vipashyana means “to perceive the superior.” Related to the Tibetan lhagthong: “To see the special.” Vipashyana is the discrimination of phenomena.

Classical Buddhism presents “Vipashyana” in different ways. But in synthesis, Vipashyana (insight meditation) should be understood as any meditation practice that by means of mental tranquility (calm abiding, Shamatha)  achieves insight into the true nature of the object of meditation.

True Vipashyana is achieved through the conscious use of the imagination, often called “clairvoyance.”

Virgin

(1) A state of sexual purity; or (2) an esoteric degree of initiation.

“Religious people know that a Virgin named “Immaculate Conception” exists.  Any mystic-illuminati perfectly knows that she lives in Eden working with the immaculate conceptions of the Holy Spirit.  When a conception without the spilling of the seminal fluid is performed, it is done by the Holy Spirit.  Such a conception is under the vigilance and direction of the “Immaculate Conception.”  We announce that this said Virgin is not the Hebrew Mary.  Indeed, the “Immaculate Conception” is a woman who attained the degree of Virgin.  Many similar women exist, true living Buddhas who attained the Fifth Initiation.  Let us remember the Virgin of the Sea (Mother of Jesus), and the eleven thousand Inca Virgins, the Virgins of the stars, the Virgin of the law, etc.  All of those women are living Buddhas, women who attained the Fifth Initiation of Major Mysteries (true human beings).  The most elevated degree for a woman is that of Virgin. The most elevated degree for a human is that of Christ.  The Virgin who renounces Nirvana and reincarnates in order to work for humanity as a human being elevates herself to the degree of Christ.” - Aztec Christic Magic

Virgo

Virgo: (August 23rd to September 22nd) The sixth sign of the zodiac. Ruled by Mercury and related to the element of earth.

“Virgo is the sign of the Celestial Virgin. Virgo is the virginal womb of Divine Nature.” - The Manual of Practical Magic

“The natives of Virgo unfortunately fall into the vicious cycle of reasoning and because of this they harm themselves. The natives of Virgo are unfortunate in love. The natives of Virgo fall into the aberrations of intellectualism and because of this do not progress.  If the natives of Virgo want to progress they should be simple; they should end all reasoning and have the minds of innocent children.” - The Manual of Practical Magic

Virtue"Virtue comes from the syllable vir, virility. The precious gems of virtues are obtained only with virility. Sexual virility, sexual potency is necessary to obtain virtues in the Flaming Forge of Vulcan. Each time that a psychic aggregate is dissolved a precious virtue emerges in ourselves." from The Pistis Sophia Unveiled

VishuddhaThe Laryngeal Chakra that is connected to the Thyroid Gland of the physical body. It is recognized in the astral body as a lotus with sixteen petals. A developed Vishuddha Chakra enables Clairaudience.

Vital Body

(Also called Ethereal Body) The superior aspect of the physical body, composed of the energy or vital force that provides life to the physical body.

"It is written that the vital body or the foundation of organic life within each one of us has four ethers. The chemical ether and the ether of life are related with chemical processes and sexual reproduction. The chemical ether is a specific foundation for the organic chemical phenomena. The ether of life is the foundation of the reproductive and transformative sexual processes of the race. The two superior ethers, luminous and reflective, have more elevated functions. The luminous ether is related with the caloric, luminous, perceptive, etc., phenomena. The reflective ether serves as a medium of expression for willpower and imagination." - The Pistis Sophia Unveiled

In TIbetan Buddhism, the vital body is known as the subtle body (lus phra-mo).

Vivekananda(1863-1902) A student of Vedanta and Ramakrishna who represented Hinduism at Chicago's Parliament of Religions in 1893. He was enormously influencial in both East and West, leaving a legacy of writings still popular today.
